Summer really seems to be heating up - with temperatures of almost 27 degrees in LDNISTA HQ - the mind moves naturally to the tropical and indulgent.  Scent is one of the most powerful and evocative senses and when the weather changes, so too do the smells of the city.  For those which can be controlled,  I am particularly enjoying more masculine and earthy scents at this time of year.  Burning in my room recently have been candles from Malin+Goetz with fragrances including tobacco, cannabis and rum.  It's something about getting back to nature, but influencedheavily with a sense of the rustic and the decadent.

I'm currently reading Against Nature by Joris-Karl Huysmans, which tells the story of a reclusive Parisian eccentric who attempts to capture and control every aspect of sensory experience.  He creates zones within his home which evoke certain moods through colour and fragrance.  A highly recommended read, particularly in an orange room with a Dark Rum candle.

A scent with cult status, the best selling Dark Rum is a modern interpretation of the iconic Bay Rum cologne, popularised in the 19th century distilled from leaves and/or berries of the West Indian bay tree.  Malin+Goetz have taken this a step further by combining the scent in their intoxicating elixir with zesty bergamot and plum, tattered leather and amber for an alluringly warm, incredibly sensual and utterly addictive effect.  Aromatic and Fruity, top notes are bergamot and plum; middle notes are leather and rum; base notes are milk, amber and patchouli.  Bourbon and tobacco leaves dominate the tobacco candle, while the cannabis has fresh lemon, orange and notes of fig.

I attended UK launch event for the Eau de parfum and body lotion in the flagship Malin+Goetz Seven Dials shop at 6 Monmouth Street earlier this month, where founders Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz enjoyed Dark Rum Blinder cocktails, served up by the talented mixologist team from BlindSpot Bar at the St Martins Lane Hotel.
