I loved the cocktails last night so much at Roka in Covent Garden’s Aldwych. A lot of my friends have told me that this is their favourite place to come for dinner. The grilled asparagus is apparently amazing, but I wasn’t there for the food. It was party time with Reechy and we were working our way through the cocktail menu pre -theatre.
The menu is enormous and as well as a whole section dedicated to whiskies of the world, the cocktail menu blows you away. I went first of all for aLipstick Rose (£11.60) which listed rose petal vodka as the first ingredient, so I thought would be like a martini, but was actually a champagne cocktail. It probably sounds like a real first world problem, but champagne cocktails just aren’t my style when in comes to cocktails. I like a cocktail to be strong and potent, and I’m not really a fan of anything with bubbles. As it was, the violet and raspberry infusions did elevate the drink above the ordinary, but I wish I’d seen a picture of it first. Reechy picked a little more wisely with a Hiro’s Ghost (£12.90) which combined white, dark and overproof rums with guava, almond, passion fruit, absinth and limes – which was just like a delicious rum cocktail; and came served in a thick mug with a mint garnish.
Our second round was much more successful, as we started to be more specific about the kind of drinks we were after. TheTokyo Sin cocktail (£12.90) combined Nikka All Malt Japanese whisky, passion fruit, lime, vanilla liqueur and coconut oil, and was served with a side shot of very high quality sake, which I just loved. Passion fruit just completed what was a very good all round drink. The other was a Nashi Pear Old Fashioned(£12.60), with Michter’s bourbon, nashi pear sake, sesame orgeat (which I still can’t pronounce properly) and sesame tincture. Gorgeous, different and icy with just the right amount of bite.
Snacks were simple dried seaweed slices and wasabi peas. All in all a great place to go and to enjoy sitting at the bar. I’d definitely go back to try the cocktails we missed.
