I've never been brave enough to embark on a juice cleanse, but people always talk about the benefits of giving your digestive system a rest for as little as a few hours, if not a few days.
Curious to see how it all worked, I stocked up on a selection of smoothies from Savse, a brand that stood out because they are one of the very few which cold-press their ingredients and use High Pressure Processing to seal their bottles rather than pasteurising.
The Savse range features some gorgeous flavours, and my favourites include:
Super Green – always suggestive of good health, nothing beats a green smoothie for pure antioxidant punch. What is less usual however is one which tastes gorgeous, whilst also remaining one of the UK’s lowest calorie smoothies (broccoli, pear, spinach, kale, kiwi, lemon, apple and banana). Fresh and wholesome, and even if you don't like your veg, this will satisfy your palate.
I'm a big fan of beetroot, but it's always such a fuss to make your own juice from as it stains everything in the kitchen (including yourself). Thoughtfully blended with mango and lime is Super Purple (beetroot, apple, lemon, lime and mango); which gives you two of your five a day in a combination which is deeply nourishing and enriching.
Seeing red with Super Red (strawberry, broccoli, celery, kale, orange and spinach); is a great combination as it mixes the sweetness of strawberries with the depth of kale and spinach - and successfully comes out on top, tasting gorgeous and not in the slightest like a health food drink.
One which I really loved, and gave a fulfilling depth of flavour was Super Blue (blueberries, kale, beetroot, spinach, strawberry, orange blackberries and apple); again the beetroot gives rich flavour and colour, but blueberries and orange cut through this with a citrus lightness, and strawberries and apple gives sweetness. This one I'd call the greatest hit.
If you are in the mood for a simple juice which you can have alongside breakfast then I'd recommend the Super Orange (mango, passion fruit, apple, celery, orange and carrot) which gives a citrus kick which is brought out in an interesting and fascinating way with the addition of passion fruit and carrot.
Purple Carrot rounds off the group with the main ingredient of antioxidant rich purple carrot and blends in the juice of pomegranate and blueberry. If you're looking for an antioxidant powerhouse then this is your best bet (purple carrot, apple, blackcurrant, pomegranate and blueberry).
I drank only Savse smoothies for a whole day, knowing that I was drinking 100% natural fruit and veg, and loving the Protein Punch when I needed that little something extra. The addition of Maca, coconut and pineapple works surprisingly well with the Whey Protein.
I felt light, fresh and surprisingly filled with long-lasting energy. Savse is a rare example of healthy and tasty going hand-in-hand, and can be picked up in Waitrose, Planet Organic and Whole Foods.
